ive been looking at locking differentials and im not understanding these this.  its same differentials just that part that says 3.92 down and 3.93 and up.

it says:

d44 power-lock,3.92 down complete.

d44 power-lock,3.93 and up complete

^ whats the difference?^

does it mean the ring gear ratio cannot be higher than 3.92 or cannot be any lower than 3.93 ?

thankk youuu : []

If im reading it correctly it means by 3.92 down is if your going to run a 3.92 and higher gear like a 3.55, 3.23 etc.. and 3.93 and up is if your going to put a lower gear in it like a 3.73, 4.10, 4.56, 5.13 etc...

buuuuuut....

It could also mean something else but thats my best guess. Havent come across that before... It migt mean the numbers on the Axle housing tag, or maybe the holes between the gears changed that the ring bolts up to im not sure

The differance is where the carrier positions the ring gear. The higher the number (lower gear ratio) the smaller the pinion gear is and the carrier has to be moved closer so the ring gear meshes right and just the opposite for lower number (higher ratio) and you can only shim it over so much. So if you stood them up side by side the 3.93 and up carrier's ring gear face would be up higher than the 3.92 and down. Some companies make an extra thick ring gear set for guys who want to run lower gears but don't want to buy a new carrier. Hope this helps, Jack

3.92 and down mumerically is a 3 serios carrier In reality the highest gear will be a 3.73 that you can put on it, unless you get the Thick gearset

3.93 and up numerically is a 4 serios carrier

And if it's for a Ford, you probably won't find a "thick gear" set since the ford d44's are a reverse rotation as opposed to the chevy, jeep, and dodge d44's that are standard rotation gears. In reality they all spin the same direction, it's the location of the pinion that makes the gear cut different.

But as it has already been said, there is a carrier split for gear ratios. 3 series for 3.92 and numerically lower and a 4 series foe 3.93 and numerically higher gears.

Yup its just the thickness/spacing on the ring and carrier
